Common Sprinter Problems

Sprinter vans are known for their versatility, capability, and long service life, but, like any specialized vehicle, they come with quirks and potential problems. If you drive a Sprinter in Lakewood, WA, or anywhere around the Puget Sound region, you’ve probably noticed how different these vans feel compared to standard work vans.

That difference is part of what makes them great, but it also means they require expertise when something goes wrong. At The Sprinter Shop in Lakewood, WA, we work exclusively on Sprinters and see patterns across different generations, engines, and driving styles. Below is a closer look at the most common Sprinter problems we diagnose and repair daily.

T1N Sprinter (2002–2006)

The T1N is loved for its simplicity and longevity, but these vans are now nearly 20 years old. Common issues include:

  • Injector seal “black death”: Fuel injector seals can leak, allowing carbon buildup that becomes difficult to remove if left untreated.
  • Turbo resonator failures: These plastic resonators can crack, leading to a sudden loss of power.
  • Rust: T1Ns are notorious for rust, especially around rocker panels and wheel arches.

Despite their age, many T1Ns and similar models that were built during this time are still on the road, and with the right care and high-quality replacement parts, they can continue serving for years.

NCV3 Sprinter (2007–2018)

The NCV3 brought more technology, more comfort, and more features, but also a handful of common problem areas:

  • DEF/AdBlue system faults: Heating elements, sensors, and injector components often fail, triggering limp mode.
  • EGR valve issues: Exhaust gas recirculation valves can clog or fail, especially on vans used for short trips.
  • Turbo actuator failures: The electronic actuator can wear out, causing boost issues without warning.
  • Oil cooler leaks: The oil cooler seals can harden over time, allowing oil to seep into the engine valley.

This generation is extremely capable, but it benefits greatly from regular diagnostic scans with Xentry and preventive maintenance.

VS30 Sprinter (2019–Present)

The newest generation of the VS30 is advanced, efficient, and powerful, but its complex electronics require precise tools and training to diagnose. Common VS30 concerns include:

  • NOx sensor failures: These sensors are part of the emissions system and can cause reduced power or warning messages when they fail.
  • Starter battery drain issues: Accessory loads and module wakeups can drain the battery if systems aren’t updated or maintained.
  • Software and module communication faults: As Sprinters become more connected, software updates and coding become essential.

Our factory-trained team uses Mercedes-Benz tools, WIS, and EPC to work through these complexities. We also service other models of the newer generation.

General Sprinter Problems Across All Generations

Regardless of model year, some issues appear across the board, such as glow plug failures (especially in cold climates), brake wear and tear, driveshaft carrier bearing wear, cooling system leaks (including radiators and hoses), and suspension fatigue. Because many Sprinters are used commercially or for long-distance travel, their mileage accumulates quickly, making proactive maintenance unskippable.

At The Sprinter Shop, our technicians own the same vans they service. That real-world experience, combined with factory training and dealer-level diagnostic tools, allows us to pinpoint issues quickly and recommend the right repairs the first time.

We operate with a customer-first, hassle-free approach, backed by Snap financing, a comfortable waiting area with snacks and Wi-Fi, loaner vehicles, after-hours drop-off, and a 2-year/24,000-mile warranty on most repairs.
